2.1: Same and different
This activity encourages students to value not only their own special things or opinions but also their peers’.
Tasks
- Show the display of special things, digital slide show or completed handouts from the previous activity to the class.
- Discuss with the class the similarities of the objects e.g. “ Hey, look at Mohammed. His special thing is a book…so is Greg’s special thing” etc.
- Ask students to draw other students’ special things which are similar to their own. Write (or ask students to write) the name of the owner beside each special thing. If there are no similar things students could draw objects they like instead.
- Ask students to sit in a circle. In turn, ask students to display their work and complete the following statement: “My special thing is my Nan and so is Jane’s” etc.
- Ask the class to look again at the display, handouts or slide show.
- Discuss with the class the differences of what is special for each child. “ Hey, look at Sharon her special thing is a photo of her grandmother but Fatima’s special thing is her teddy bear” etc
- Ask students to draw things they like that are different from their own special thing.
- In a circle, ask students to display their work and complete the following statement: “My special thing is my Nan but Jane’s is her dog” etc.
- This activity encourages students to value not only their own special things or opinions but also their peers’.
- This activity may be conducted over several sessions.
- If students have completed Handout 1: Special things about me! they may be collated as a book.
