1.2: All about me timeline

In this activity students create a timeline of major events in their lives.

Tasks

  1. Explain to the class that you are going to create a timeline of the major events in students' lives. As a model, describe your own life or a fictitious one asking students to listen for the main events.
  2. Discuss the meaning of major and minor. On the board or on butcher's paper, create two columns entitled "Major" and "Minor". Ask students to recall the events that you have related and as a class sort them into major and minor events.
  3. Record students' answers in the appropriate column.
  4. Using information from the "Major" events column, jointly construct a timeline with students to represent the life you have described.
  5. Lead a class discussion on the important events in students' lives inviting students to contribute their ideas.
  6. Ask students to construct their own timelines based on their lives. Students may be asked to decorate their timelines with drawing or pictures.
  7. Ask students to form groups of three or four. Ask groups to discuss their timelines, sharing what they consider to be the most important event in their lives.
  8. Ask groups to report to the class the new things they have learnt about the members of their groups.
  9. After the activity, display timelines in the classroom.
Teacher Notes
  1. Draw students' attention to events such as birth, birth of siblings, arrival in Australia, starting school, significant holidays. Major events may differ across cultures and between families.
  2. Sensitivity may be required in dealing with students' experiences. Not all students' experiences will be positive, particularly in cases of children who may have experienced family difficulties, loss, displacement, migration or war.
  3. This activity may be conducted over several sessions.
