1.1: Individual ability
In this activity students explore the notion that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses which make each one a unique individual.
Tasks
- Distribute copies of Handout 1: Jumbled activity.
Explain that some people find it hard to read because their brain mixes
up the way they the letters look just like they appear on the handout.
- Ask students to complete the handout.
- After the activity, ask the students to discuss what they found confusing and how they felt.
- As
a follow up, ask students to create two lists of things they are "good
at doing" and "not good at doing" e.g. reading, swimming, cooking,
following instructions etc.
- In pairs or small groups, ask students to compare and contrast their individual strengths and weaknesses.
- Conclude the activity by explaining that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses which make them unique individuals.
- Teachers should ensure that students do not negatively
comment upon or otherwise inappropriately discuss class mates'
abilities, inabilities, strengths and weaknesses.
