1.5: Special things
This activity encourages students to recognise that different people may value different people and things.
Tasks
- Ask students to bring in something special to school e.g. teddy bear, photo of their family etc.
- Ask students to tell the class why it is special.
- Ask students to sit in a circle and complete the following statement: "My special thing is my Nan and Z's (student on the right) special thing is his puppy."
- Ask students to write or trace their names on labels and tag their special thing.
- Discuss with the class what is special to them:
- I like ...
- I am good at ...
- Something special to me is ...
- Someone special to me is ...
- Ask students to complete and colour Handout 1: Special things about me!
- Display students' work to be used as basis for discussion.
- Teacher may need to use a camera to photograph articles that cannot be left at school or use a digital camera to make a slide show of all the articles.
