3.2: Fair and unfair
Students identify fair and unfair situations at school and home.
Tasks
- Discuss with the class whether the following behaviours are fair or unfair:
School:
- Why do you think we line up to come into class?
- Why do you think we put the crayons in the middle of the table?
- Why do you think we’re quiet when we’re working?
- Why do you think we line up at the canteen?
- Why do we take turns at activities, with the equipment etc?
- Why do we put our hands up to speak to the class or teacher?
- Why do we have to ask permission to leave the classroom?
Home:
- Do you have to tidy your toys? Why?
- Do you have to share with other members of the family? Why?
- Do you have to help with the housework? Why?
- Do you always insist on watching your favourite program on television? Why
- Do you only want new clothes, toys and books? Why?
- Do you have to do what you’re asked and when you’re asked? Why?
- Conclude by explaining that what seems fair to some people may be unfair to someone else. Using appropriate language, encourage students to realise that with rights come responsibilities.
- Teachers should pose questions to elicit discussion as students may not be able to identify fair and unfair situations independently.
- School and home questions may be discussed in separate sessions.
