1.5: Diversity time capsule
In this activity students construct a time capsule which represents the different identities of the students in the classroom.
Tasks
- Introduce this activity by explaining that our individual identities are shaped by where we, and our families, have come from and the major events in our lives. Our individual abilities and personalities help contribute to our individual identities or who we are.
- Explain to the class that you will be constructing a time capsule which represents the different identities of the students in the classroom. Ask students to recall the previous activities – Who am I, personal timelines, acrostic poems and world wide web. Ask the students to consider:
- Which of these items should be included in the time capsule?
- What else could be included?
Record students’ responses on the board or on butcher’s paper.
- Based on the students’ responses, collect (or ask students to collect) acrostic poems, timelines, maps and other items and place them in a time capsule (folder or box) to represent the diversity of the class.
- You may ask the class to create artwork to decorate the capsule. The time capsule is presented to the library or otherwise displayed for future students.
- Where this activity is used in isolation, more time may need to be devoted to defining diversity and to collecting materials which represent the diversity of the classroom.
