2.1: Like and dislikes

Students discuss each other's likes and dislikes sensitively using appropriate language.

Tasks

  1. Introduce this activity by explaining that different people have different individual likes and dislikes.
  2. Distribute Handout 5: Like and dislikes and ask students to complete the column entitled “Me”, filling in the names of food, sport, music and TV shows that they personally like and dislike.
  3. Then ask students to form pairs and find out from their partner the names of food, sport, music or TV shows they like and dislike. Students should write this information on Handout 5 in the column entitled “My friend”.
  4. Using the information on the completed handouts, ask students to complete the statements:
    • I am like _________because I…….
    • I am not like _________ because I….
    Example:
    • I am like Dina because I like pizza.
    • I am not like Dina because I like soccer and she likes basketball.
  5. After this activity, ask students to share their findings about their similarities and differences. You may wish to record the findings on the board or on butcher’s paper.
  6. Lead a class discussion on the other ways in which people are similar and different. Ask students to brainstorm the positive things about being similar and about being different. Record students’ responses on the board or on butcher’s paper.
