2.2: Class collage

This activity encourages the use of positive language when describing classmates.

Tasks

  1. Write students' names on separate pieces of paper (or cardboard) and place them in a tin.
  2. Ask students to each select a name from the tin and ask them to write down three positive things to say about this person.

  3. Example:
    • I chose Amy.
    • She is kind.
    • She has nice blue eyes.
    • She lets me play games.
  4. Ask students to sit in a circle and share what they have written.
  5. Ask students to find a friend and create a drawing or paper model of each other. Under the artwork, students should write positive descriptions of their friend.

  6. Example:
    • This is Mary.
    • She has _____________ hair.
    • She has _____________ eyes.
    • She is _________________ and ________________.
  7. After this activity, ask students to brainstorm all the good things about their class and how the individuals in it contribute to making it a great class. Record students' responses on the board or on butcher's paper.
  8. Jointly construct an exposition "Class X is a great class because…."
  9. Display the exposition and the student artwork in the classroom.
Teacher Notes
  1. Teachers should ensure that descriptions and artwork about students are positive.
  2. Encourage students to observe and discuss shape, colour and position of facial and other features during the drawing/model activity.
