4.1: Scenarios
This activity aims to help students understand the relationship between prejudiced thinking and prejudiced behaviour.
Tasks
- Explain to students that sometimes we prejudge others before
we know them based on how they look or what someone else has said. The
way we think about people can affect the way we relate to them or how
we treat them. Prejudiced thinking leads to prejudiced behaviour.
- Discuss
with the class the kinds of unfair behaviours which may result from our
prejudices. Ask students to provide some examples from school and home.
In each example try to draw out the prejudiced thinking.
- Ask
students to think about times when they have been unfairly treated or
treated someone else unfairly. Ask them how they feel when they are
treated unfairly. List the effects of unfair treatment.
- Tell
students you are going to look at some examples of unfair treatment
based on prejudiced thinking. Display handouts 11, 12, 13 and 14. Lead
students through each scenario. Discuss the nature of the prejudiced
thinking in each.
- This activity aims to help students understand the relationship between prejudiced thinking and prejudiced behaviour.
- It also aims to provide students with opportunities to explore the effects of unfair or prejudiced behaviour.
