2.2: Every picture tells a story
In this activity students discover that regardless of differences we share the many of the qualities which make us all human.
Tasks
- Introduce this activity by explaining that you will be showing the class images of children from diverse backgrounds.
- Use Handouts 6,7,8 and 9: Emotions 1-4 as either overhead transparencies or individual handouts. For each of the images, ask the class to guess:
- how the child in the picture is feeling
- where the child lives
- what the child is doing.
During the discussion, you may find that students have different interpretations of pictures depending on personal experiences. Encourage the students to accept all ideas equally.
- Ask students to each pick one of the pictures and then write down what they believe the child in the picture is feeling and why. Then, ask for volunteers to read their answers and ask students why they chose the picture.
- Conclude the activity by explaining that regardless of differences such as background, country of birth, personal circumstances, we share qualities such as emotions - happiness, sadness, love - which make us all human.
- Teachers should pay particular attention to ensuring that students' guesses are as far as possible free from cultural stereotyping and expressed using appropriate language.
