2.5: Diversity quilt

In this activity students explore their heritage.

Tasks

  1. Explain to the class that they will be asked to research their own heritage using information about their own family history.
  2. Distribute Handout 12: Family history questionnaire to the class, going through each question to ensure that all the key concepts are understood. Students should be encouraged to modify the handout if required to better reflect their own family unit. It may be appropriate for students to add to or replace family members listed on the handout.
  3. Ask students to take home the handouts and interview their parents, grandparents and/or other family members.
  4. Using the completed handouts, a map of the world, drawing pins and coloured yarn, trace each student's ancestry from their ancestors' place or places of origin to where they live now. Note that it may be useful to also have a map of Australia so that internal movement can also be traced. Use a different coloured piece of yarn for each student.
  5. Ask students to create an image that represents their ancestry. Students can create their own picture or research a symbol from their ancestral home. Students transfer these pictures onto squares of hessian. Pictures may be painted or stitched on. When completed, all squares are stitched or stapled together to form a diversity quilt which may be displayed in the classroom.
Teacher Notes
  1. This activity should be conducted over tow or more sessions.
  2. Handout 12 should be used as a model and may need to be modified to reflect the diversity of the classroom and the diversity of family structures.
  3. In some cases, as in the case with Aboriginal students, movement of ancestors will not be from another country. Teachers will need to ensure that the mapping activity is inclusive of all students' ancestry.
