3.4: Black like Kyra, white like me

In this activity students use a text to recognise and discuss prejudice.

Tasks

  1. Review the idea that stereotypes and other over-generalisations about people can have negative effects.
  2. Read Black like Kyra, white like me by Judith Vigna or a similar text which deals with the issue of prejudice.
  3. After reading, lead a class discussion relating to the prejudiced attitudes displayed in the text:
    • How did Christy feel when her friend moved into her neighbourhood?
    • How did the neighbours feel?
    • What did they do?
    • How do you think Kyra and her family feel?
  4. Ask the class to brainstorm a list of words that may be used to describe the feelings, thoughts and actions of the neighbours towards Kyra and her family. List the words on butcher's paper or on the board.
  5. Introduce the concept of prejudice explaining to the students that the neighbours were prejudiced against Kyra because she was black. As a class or in small groups, ask students to write their own definitions of prejudice using the words on the board/butcher's and terms previously studied such as fact, opinion, over-generalisation and stereotype.
Teacher Notes
  1. Any text which explores the theme of prejudice may be used as an alternative to the suggested text. Discussion questions may be adapted to relate more directly to selected texts.
