2.2: The changing face of diversity
In this activity students explore the concept of diversity.
Tasks
- Introduce the concept of diversity to students explaining that Australians come from a wide range of Indigenous and immigrant backgrounds.
- Read My Place to the class.
- Lead a class discussion on how Australia has changed over the 200 year time period in the book.
- Ask students to list the many cultural backgrounds of the people living in My Place over the years. What do they all have in common? How are they the same and different?
- Ask students to research and list the names and cultural backgrounds of the people living around "their own place".
- This activity may be conducted over several weeks focusing on a different section of the text each lesson.
- Students may need to be assisted to recognise that every Australian has a cultural background or "ethnicity".
- My
Place is a book which examines the changing diversity of a Australian
town over the course of history. If available, similar texts may be
used for this activity.
