4.5: Rules for a happy class
Tasks
- Write "rule" on the board.
- "What's a rule?" Ask students to suggest examples of rules and write them on the board under the heading "What's a rule". If necessary teacher may suggest examples.
- Choose a suitable example for discussion. e.g. "You're not allowed to drive too fast." Explain why or in what circumstances the example is needed. Who does it affect? Does it ensure a degree of fairness for all? Ask students to discuss other examples.
- Ask students whether they know any class rules. Discuss why we need class rules. Ask students if they can think of any other rules we need for a happy class. Revisit the questions posed in Activity 3.2 Fair and unfair and discuss the fair and unfair behaviours at school.
- After the discussion, decide on the most important 6 – 10 rules for a happy class and scribe them on a piece of card or butcher's paper for display.
- This activity encourages students to understand that they can influence decisions which help make fairer daily lives for all.
